What also helps is the speed and efficiency with which the combat is managed, which is quick enough that even the most routine of battle is never a chore. The turn-based combat is less unusual, but the emphasis on position and teamwork still feels modern. Why this might be is baffling but the abandonment of random battles in favour of enemies you can see and avoid works much better than the infuriating norm. But what’s so exasperating about Chrono Trigger is that almost every one of its advancements has been almost completely ignored by every game since. There are inherent dangers in playing such a lauded title this late in the day, not least the fact that many of its then innovations might now seem old hat. The dialogue is simplistic but it’s still hard not to be engaged by it all, especially as many of the characters eventually reveal themselves to be far less cliched than they initially appear. Just as importantly the characters are all likeable, from the spiky-haired hero to Robo the gardening robot.

The new full-powered Masamune becomes the second most powerful weapon in the entire game, the first being Crono's sword called Rainbow. So, they reveal that they were holding back throughout the game, but now believe that Frog is worthy of his true power. By doing this, Frog shows his true will, impressing Masa and Mune. In one of the side quests near the end of the game, Frog must go to Cyrus' haunted tomb to make peace with his spirit. If the player chooses not to be violent towards him, Magus joins the group, but if instead he is fought and killed, Frog will revert to human form in some endings. Frog confronts Magus again after the disasters at Zeal's Ocean Palace ("Ocean Palace").

During Chrono Trigger, Frog must acquire the Masamune / Granleon and the Hero's Medal (" Hero's Medal ") to gather the strength to face Magus once more. Ashamed of his new form, Glenn took the name Frog ('toad' in English ) and began living as a hermit in a remote forest. According to the plot, the wizard Magus murdered Cyrus and turned Glenn into a toad on the advice of his assistant Ozzie. Frog was originally a young squire named Glenn and a very good friend of the hero Cyrus de Guardia.
